Normally, I keep baking and product marketing away from one another. I do product marketing on weekdays. I bake during weekends.
However, it was different on Jun 12th, Wednesday.
The first virtual session was over. The second session I organized for internal teams in Freshworks was due in four hours.
I didn’t have much time.
I had to bake something for my avva’s (grandma) birthday.
As baking a proper cake was out of the question, I tried the 1-minute microwave mug cake only to have the cocoa powder leave a bitter taste in my mouth.
I was frantically scrolling through my bookmarks when the ‘deep dish cookie bowl for two’ caught my attention. I mixed the ingredients, pressed the cookie dough into an aluminium ramekin, and timed 15 minutes in my oven.
A delicious smell wafted from the kitchen at the fifth minute which instantly turned into a burnt smell. I took it out to see that the outer layer looked fine while the inner layer was completely burnt.
Understanding that the cut off time is much lesser than what’s mentioned in the recipe, I made another bowl quickly and kept a close watch on the oven.
This time, I saw the dough burn in front of my eyes.
I tried one more time in a glass bowl. Third time was not a charm.
As I wasn’t ready to waste another bowl, I had to abandon my efforts to make a cake for avva. And that was the first and last time I baked on a weekday.
While it’s best not to attempt baking and product marketing in a tight schedule, coming up with similarities between baking and product marketing was easy-peasy. As crazy as it sounds, here are the first five comparisons:
1. Getting started
2. Taking one step at a time
3. Getting a mentor
4. Never giving up
5. Working together
To be continued in the final part…
UPDATE: The second part of how baking and product marketing are related is out!
